Employment solicitor, Charlotte Holman, takes a look at the current changes in employment law in relation to the national minimum wage.
The national minimum wage increased on 1 April 2024 from £10.42 to £11.44 per hour. This rate will apply to workers who are 21 and over (previously it was 23).
Employers will need to ensure that they are paying staff in accordance with the prescribed rates and keep sufficient records in relation to payments made to workers.
From 6 April 2024, the statutory sick pay rate will increase from £109.40 per week to £116.75.
From 7 April 2024, the rate of statutory maternity pay, statutory paternity pay, statutory adoption pay, statutory shared parental pay and statutory parental bereavement pay will increase from £172.48 per week to £184.03.
These rates are raised every April in line with any annual increase in consumer prices index (CPI) measured in the previous September. If there is no change or a decrease in CPI, the rates will remain the same.
