Every year, the partners and staff at Holmes & Hills choose a charity to support throughout the year. This year the firm have selected Cancer Research UK, a charity close to the hearts of many of the employees.
Last year, Holmes & Hills Solicitors raised over £6,900 for the Essex Air Ambulance as a result of their 9th Charity Bike Ride on Sunday 7th September 2014 and staff dress down days throughout the year. We hope to raise even more this year to support this worthy cause. Cancer Research spent £332 million in the financial year 2010/11 on research. They don’t receive funding from the Government and they rely on people like us to make a difference.
331,487 people in the UK were diagnosed with cancer in 2011. Cancer Research UK studies the cancer risk in over a million people, funds over 4000 scientists, doctors and nurses in the UK and supports over 200 clinical trials. Their strategy is to beat cancer sooner. More people are beating cancer than ever before – only 25% survived back in the 1970s, whereas today more than 50% of cancer patients survive for at least 10 years. Their target is for 75% of people to survive cancer within the next 20 years.
The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund merged on 4 February 2002 to form the charity, Cancer Research UK, the largest independent research organisation in the world dedicated to fighting cancer. The purpose of the charity is to lower the number of deaths from the disease through research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This vital research is carried out by researchers across the UK in universities, hospitals and institutes.
Cancer Research UK also provides information about cancer to the public via their website, www.cancerresearchuk.org, their confidential telephone service, their online forum Cancer Chat, the Cancer Awareness Roadshow, leaflets and the medical journal, the British Journal of Cancer. The charity also influences public policy by working with the UK government, i.e. Cancer Research UK helped to bring into force the smoking ban in England and lobbies for better screening programmes.
There are over 40,000 regular volunteers helping to raise funds through donations, events, community fundraising, legacies, retail and corporate partnerships. Holmes & Hills look forward to another successful year of fundraising in 2015.
