With more and more people having laser hair removal procedures carried out at beauty salons, leading skin specialists are warning that the lack of regulation is leading to many procedures being carried out unsafely, sometimes with devastating effects for patients.
The British Association of Dermatologists is arguing many beauty therapists lack the necessary training to perform laser hair removal procedures safely. It is reported in some instances patients are being treated with the wrong lasers and using the wrong settings causing burns, severe skin irritation and scarring.
With a series of treatments costing many hundreds and even thousands of pounds in some cases, patients can be left out of pocket and with long term scarring on the skin.
The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (Babtac) agreed change in the industry was needed and stated it was in favour of a system of self regulation.
Julie Speed, General Manager of Babtac said “As an industry we’ve had a lot of equipment come in from abroad which has perhaps been cheaper and not as well produced.”
