Essex Hospitals Use Faulty DePuy Hip Replacement Units

Hospitals in Essex are reported to have implanted hundreds of patients with faulty hip units in hip replacement operations carried out between 2003 and 2010. Holmes & Hills' team of clinical negligence solicitors are acting for patients who received hips at Southend University Hospital, Basildon & Thurrock Hospital, Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford and Colchester Hospital, as well as several others in the county.

The faulty hips in question are the DePuy ASR hip units. These were used in many younger hip replacement patients as they were expected to last longer than other models. In actual fact it has now been revealed DePuy ASR hips fail in around 49% of cases after just five years. This compares to other hip replacement units which have an everage failure rate of only 2.9% after the same length of time.

DePuy the manufacturer of the hips and a subsidiary of the Johnson & Johnson company, recalled the hips in August 2010 as problems with the hips began to emerge. Patients implanted with a DePuy hip have suffered significant and persistent pain, swelling, reduced mobility, erosion of tissue around the hip and even blood poisoning.

Holmes & Hills are acting for a significant number of patients across the country making compensation claims against DePuy. However, as well as acting against DePuy, Holmes & hills are also investigating another model of hip (produced by another manufacturer) also used by several Essex hospitals.
